Carien van Reekum

The photo was taken when I was about 2 ½ years old. Even with the support wheels, I remember cycling up and, preferably, down this mountain of a driveway behind me in the photo.

Cycling has been part of my life for as long as I can recall, as it is for most who are born and raised in the Netherlands: To and from kindergarten on the back of my mother’s bike, then to school by myself. To get the local lake for a swim in summer, to being lost in the forest, to explore a new city, anywhere I want to go. Freedom!
